I am a developer, team lead and blogger with a deep interest in health.
What excites me now is using the latest tools and technologies to improve health – wearable technology, nutrition and online labs.
I love to learn about the latest research in the field, self-experiment and share my learning’s blogging and speaking at conferences.
I've always been fascinated by technology and what it allows us to do. From a very early age, I've been building things in my father's garage, making model aircraft or pestering my parents for the latest ‘wearable' device.
This love of technology led me to study aeronautical engineering. From there I transferred into computer science. I’ve enjoyed working in this space for the last 15 years.
Working for dynamic Irish tech companies has given in me a wide range of skills – both tech and soft. It’s also given me the opportunity to travel.
My Work Impacted My Health Dramatically…
15 years working in an office environment has taken its toll on my health. Eating unhealthy lunches at my desk. Sitting eight hours per day. Stress from tight deadlines and difficult customers.
I was overweight. I didn't exercise. I rarely socialised.
Problems that surfaced about ten years ago only got worse. Now I recognise that…
Until I couldn't ignore them any longer.
I DIDN'T NEED A PRESCRIPTION. I NEEDED A LIFESTYLE CHANGE
Doctors have been helpful. But a doctor cannot ‘prescribe' a healthy diet and less stress.
As a problem solver, I looked For better solutions
Health and a passion for new technology led me to Quantified Self and Biohacking movements.
With tools, we can explore new diets and lifestyles. We can see the changes in real-time.
Over the last two years, I've been able to bring myself back to health. Right now, my health has never been better.
It's not just health. It's energy levels. It's mental focus.
I AM NOT UNIQUE
Since joining Quantified Self, I've heard many similar stories of people tackling health problems with a problem-solving mindsets. In the Dublin meetup group. On blogs. At conferences.
Everyone has unique problems.
In Quantified Self, many have figured out unique approaches to tackling their problems, bringing themselves back to health.
I believe the future of health will be self-quantified
We’re already self-measuring - weight, thermometers, blood glucose.
Advanced testing is getting easier & cheaper with new devices and labs like InsideTracker.
The Qualcomm X-Prize foundation have just closed on the Tricorder competition, bringing Star Track self-diagnosis into all our homes.
And artificial intelligence will support. Supporting drive to health and fitness. Diagnosing conditions years before they become serious.
IF I SAW IN REAL TIME WHAT MY LIFESTYLE WAS DOING TO MY HEALTH TEN YEARS AGO, I WOULD HAVE CHANGED THEN.
I believe these will bring very positive changes for us all. Its being part of that change that motivates me.
